Stud Poker: Rules and Variants

Stud poker is an umbrella term for poker games where poker cards are received by each player in stages. Each round of card distribution is alternated by rounds of betting.

Stud poker is a most variable game. The flexibility of stud poker in terms of rule structure lends it numerous game variants. To name a few, there's 5-card stud, 6-card stud, 7-card stud, Razz, and elephant stud poker.

Before playing, be aware of the specific rules and betting structure of the game. You might perhaps need to vary or suit your strategies around these differences.

In stud poker, basically, each player gets one hole card and one face-up card. The players take a look at their face-down cards without turning their cards face up. Players then make their first round of betting. Whichever player has the highest face-up card makes the first bet.

Another card is added to each player's hand. The card is distributed around face up. This is followed by another series of betting. This cycle goes on until the players receive their fifth card, followed by the last series of betting. Usually, the fifth card is dealt face down.

Thereafter, a showdown takes place. The face-down cards are revealed. The winning hand is determined.

Again, stud poker has numerous game variations. Variations exist in matters of structure. One finds slight degree of differences between betting rules, wild card rules, and number of betting rounds among the variants of stud poker.

Simply by adding more hole cards or laying less hole cards, one can arrive at numerous game variations. 5-card stud, for instance, uses one hole card and one face up card. In 7-card stud, the primary deal consists of two hole cards and one face up card.

Reducing the number of betting rounds and increasing or reducing the number of wild cards are other methods of varying a game.

Despite the slight differences among stud poker game variants, conventionally, each stud poker betting round is named based on the number of cards players have in hand in the course of the betting round. If they have three cards, for instance, the betting round is referred to as "third card." It may also be referred to as "third street."

Knowing the specific play and betting structure of each game variant is essential to playing well. You might need to vary your betting and play strategies as well. What works for 5-card stud poker and may not work for elephant stud. Stud poker is merely an umbrella term for the many stud games there are in the poker world.
